Most European stock markets were closed for trading today, for May Day, leaving the benchmark index struggling for direction at the open. The Stoxx Europe 600 index was marginally higher at 337.94 after closing down 0.2% on Wednesday. The U.K.'s FTSE 100 index was among the few exchanges open for trade, moving up 0.2% to 6,796.49. Lloyds Banking Group PLC climbed 2.8% in London after the bank reported a 22% rise in first-quarter adjusted profit. Schroders PLC picked up 1.7% after a well-received earnings report. Elsewhere, Danske Bank AS rose 1% after the Copenhagen-based bank said profit almost doubled in the first quarter.
