Federal Reserve officials will be watching closely in coming months for signals that the economy is faltering, said Fed Chairwoman Janet Yellen on Thursday. Yellen said it was hard to know how much weather played a role in recent disappointing economic reports, but said she and her colleagues would be watching the issue in the coming weeks and months. Yellen's comments came in a surprise addition to her prepared testimony, which otherwise was identical to her Feb. 11 statement. "Since my appearance before the House committee, a number of data releases have pointed to softer spending than many analysts had expected. Part of that softness may reflect adverse weather conditions, but at this point it is difficult to discern how much," Yellen said. "In the weeks and months ahead, my colleagues and I will be attentive to signals that indicate whether the recovery is progressing in line with our earlier expectations," Yellen said. The Fed policy committee will next meet on March 18-19.
